What is the ruling on bearing false witness under the influence of sorcery or hypnosis?
If hypnotism is done with the help of jinn and devils, then it is forbidden and considered a form of polytheistic divination. However, if it is done through a permissible means, it takes the ruling of the purpose for which it will be used. Thus, using it to extract information from criminals is permissible. If a witness testifies falsely under the influence of hypnotism, he is not held accountable, based on the hadith: "Mistake, forgetfulness, and what they are coerced into, have been lifted from my Ummah." However, he is responsible for the resulting harm and must strive to rectify it upon awakening, for the liability remains his, even if the sin is lifted from him.
