What are the rulings regarding a woman wiping over her head covering (khimar) for ablution (wudu'), and are they similar to the rulings regarding wiping over socks?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on wiping over a woman's khimar (head covering). Those Hanafis who permitted it made the khimar analogous to khuffs (leather socks) and jawrabayn (regular socks) in requiring it to be worn in a state of purity and in setting a time limit for wiping over it. However, the more correct opinion is that this saying is unsound, as analogy to khuffs is imprecise, and the conditions for khuffs are not required for wiping over a khimar or a imamah (turban). There is no common underlying reason that unites them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, specified purity for khuffs but not for the imamah or khimar. No sound evidence has been transmitted regarding the condition of wearing a imamah in a state of purity or setting a time limit for wiping over it; what has been narrated in this regard is weak.
