Did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, slaughter 63 camels during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and what were the reasons if that is true?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, slaughtered sixty-three camels with his own hand, and Ali ibn Abi Talib slaughtered thirty-seven camels out of the hundred that were with them.

Scholars reconciled this with the Hadith of Anas regarding the Prophet's, peace and blessings be upon him, slaughtering of seven camels by stating that Anas only witnessed the seven, while Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, witnessed the completion of his slaughter.

As for the reasons for slaughtering sacrificial animals (hady) during Hajj, it is either for supererogation, seeking closeness to Allah, or it is obligatory if the pilgrim is performing Hajj al-Tamattu'.

It was said regarding the reason for limiting the slaughter to sixty-three camels that it is an indication of the number of years of the Prophet's life, peace and blessings be upon him.
