What is the ruling on working in marketing and supervising a summer English language program held in Britain, knowing that student accommodation will be mixed and difficult to control?

It was previously explained that mixed-gender housing for male and female students is forbidden. The mere independence of rooms is insufficient; rather, the facilities for male students must be separate from those for female students. If the facilities are shared, or if there is a strong presumption that immoral acts will occur, then marketing the program is impermissible.

As for supervising it, the original ruling is that it is impermissible. However, if there is hope that it will reduce corruption between male and female students, then there is no harm, and a person will be rewarded, Allah willing. This is because Islamic law is based on bringing about benefits and warding off harms. Ibn Taymiyyah issued a fatwa permitting the assumption of positions of authority that obligate their holder to collect forbidden taxes, provided that he strives for justice, removes oppression, and lightens the taxes as much as he can, and provided that his remaining in the position is better than his leaving it. This is because if he leaves it, someone else will come who will increase the oppression. This may even be obligatory if no one else can undertake it.
