What is the ruling on a woman who left her husband because he consumed intoxicants and married another man without divorcing the first, and lived with him for 9 years until he died?

Drinking intoxicants is a heinous sin and a major one among the grave sins. A husband drinking intoxicants does not release his wife from his bond ( عصمته ) nor does it permit her to leave him or marry someone else. Therefore, a woman who marries another man while her first husband is still alive remains bound to her first husband, and her second marriage is null and void ( باطل ), and her relationship with the second husband is forbidden ( محرمة ). She does not inherit from him, as no inheritance results from any فاسد (invalid/corrupt) marriage. The aforementioned woman must repent to Allah for her association with that man and return to her husband, asking for his forgiveness. If she fears harm from remaining with him, she may refer her case to the Sharia court.
