Is it permissible to slaughter a cow or a buffalo by its tail if it has fallen into a well and there is no way to rescue it, and would its meat be lawful to eat thereafter?

If a cow that has fallen into a well cannot be slaughtered in the usual place of slaughter, it is permissible to stab it in any possible spot with the intention of slaughtering it, and its meat becomes lawful to eat. This is because, in this situation, the slaughter occurs wherever it can be performed with a weapon. Imam Al-Shafi’i, Ibn Omar, and Ibn Al-Musayyib have issued fatwas to this effect.
