Is it permissible for a husband to expel his wife, divorced with a single divorce (talaq raj'i), from their home during her waiting period ('iddah)?

An 'iddah observer (a woman observing the waiting period) must remain in the home where the reason for the 'iddah occurred and should not leave it except out of necessity. The Lawgiver made this obligatory in His (Allah's) statement: "{Do not expel them from their homes}." It is not permissible for the husband or anyone else to expel her, nor is it permissible for her to leave, even if the husband consents, because the 'iddah is a right of Allah Almighty. However, the Hanbalis are of the view that a irrevocably divorced woman is not obliged to remain in the 'iddah dwelling, but rather it is recommended for her to do so. As for the necessities that permit the 'iddah observer to leave, they include: fear for her life or property from demolition, fire, or drowning; or if the house is not secure; or fear of thieves or wicked people; or severe harm from neighbors. Based on this, expelling the 'iddah observer due to a customary fear is not permissible and does not permit the wife to be expelled until she completes her 'iddah in her home, and the view of the majority of scholars on this issue is more cautious.
