What is the ruling on interpreting dreams and believing in them, and is it forbidden to feel fear or optimism because of a dream? What is the difference between dreams that come true and those that do not? What is the interpretation of a dream about a friend returning after taking a bag, and then getting it back from him after a long chase, only to discover his return in reality on the same day?

Interpreting dreams is not forbidden, but rather permissible for those with knowledge, and it is not obligatory. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would sometimes interpret them and sometimes leave them. What a person sees in their sleep may or may not come true, so one should not believe that it will inevitably happen, nor should one fear it. It is permissible for whoever sees a good dream to be optimistic about it. To overcome fear of a bad dream, one should conceal it, seek refuge in Allah from its evil, and engage in prayer and remembrance. Dreams are of three types: a good dream from Allah, a distressing dream from Satan, and what a person thinks to himself. Whoever sees what he dislikes, let him spit lightly to his left three times, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, and not tell anyone about it, for it will not harm him.
