How should one deal with a stubborn wife who disobeys her husband, puts him in embarrassing situations, disrespects his family and speaks ill of them, and does not respond to advice, despite her commitment to prayer and fasting? And the question remains: What is the message directed to the wife?
The wife must obey her husband in what is permissible. Part of her good companionship is to be kind to his family, overlook their mistakes, and help him in being dutiful to his parents and maintaining ties of kinship. If the wife does not obey her husband in what is obligatory upon her, she is considered disobedient (nashiz). The last resort is divorce if she does not desist from her disobedience. The husband should be patient and not hasten, and he should look at her good qualities, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman. If he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another."
