Will a man be withheld from Paradise due to his debt to a car company if he dies while owing installments that would continue for three years?
The soul of the believer is suspended by his debt until it is paid off. The meaning of "suspended" is that its matter is halted; it suffers and does not experience bliss until the debt is paid. Scholars differed on whether the hadith includes those who left behind assets to fulfill their debt or not, with the majority holding that it is inclusive, contrary to those who restricted it to those who left behind assets. Al-Shawkani clarified that this applies specifically to one who left money to pay off his debt. As for one who intended to pay but left no money, Allah Almighty will pay it off for him. Debts are of two kinds: one who intends to pay it off, Allah is his guardian; and one who does not intend to pay it off, his good deeds will be taken. Deferred debts become due upon death, according to the majority of scholars.
