How did sodomy begin?

The people of Lot were the first to commit the abomination of sodomy (liwat). Commentators have mentioned narrations from Ibn Abbas regarding how this began. Among them is what Al-Suyuti reported from Ibn Abbas, that they committed this act to prevent travelers from taking their fruits. They had agreed that any stranger who came to their lands would be sodomized and fined four dirhams. It was also mentioned that Iblis came to them in the form of a beautiful boy and invited them to himself, so they engaged in sexual acts with him, and thus the abomination spread among them.
