The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade men from wearing gold. He once pulled off a gold ring from a man's hand and threw it away, saying: "One of you aims for a live coal from Hellfire and places it on his hand." This hadith, and others, indicate that the prohibition is one of complete prohibition (tahrim). Imam An-Nawawi reported a consensus (ijma') on the prohibition of gold rings for men.
