Muslims have unanimously agreed on the leadership of Ibn Abbas in knowledge and exegesis. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed for him to gain understanding in religion and to be taught the interpretation (of the Quran). The entire Quran was not expounded upon in the early period; rather, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Companions interpreted what people needed. The statements of the Companions regarding interpretation differed, and this was a difference of diversity and mercy. The Quran is a vast ocean from which scholars draw, each according to their specialization. A number of Companions, such as Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Ibn Mas'ud, Ubayy ibn Ka'b, and Zayd ibn Thabit, were among the most knowledgeable in exegesis. Ali and Ibn Mas'ud were particularly renowned for their extensive knowledge of the Quran. Ibn Abbas was the most knowledgeable among his generation concerning exegesis, and the people of Mecca were the most knowledgeable in exegesis because they were the companions of Ibn Abbas.
