Does placing a picture of the deceased cause them torment in their grave?

It is not permissible to hang pictures of living beings (those with souls), whether they are alive or dead. The sin falls upon the one who hangs them, or orders them to be hung, or approves of it without denouncing it. If the deceased did not recommend it and did not approve of it during their lifetime, then it does not harm them after their death. However, if they did recommend it, then it harms them because they recommended a sin, and no one should obey them in that. The evidence for the prohibition is the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prohibition of images and his saying: "Indeed, the makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection," and his saying to Ali: "Do not leave any image without obliterating it." The deceased who did not approve of their picture being hung or did not order it, is not harmed by it, as Allah Almighty says: "And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another," rather, the sin falls upon the one who hung it.
