What is the authenticity of the hadith: "O Allah, apportion for us from Your fear..." and is it legislated to supplicate with it collectively, raising hands, followed by the recitation of the supplication for expiation of the gathering?

The supplication "O Allah, apportion to us of Your awe..." is one of the greatest prophetic supplications. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to supplicate with it for himself and his companions. It encompasses the goodness of both this world and the Hereafter. The supplication means seeking a share of the awe of Allah that prevents one from committing sins, and a share of obedience that leads to Paradise, and a share of certainty that makes the calamities of this world bearable. It also includes asking to enjoy one's hearing, sight, and strength in obedience to Allah until death, and to make vengeance only against the oppressor, and not to let calamity befall one's religion, or let this world be one's greatest concern and the extent of one's knowledge, and asking not to be subjected to those who show no mercy. Supplicating with it in congregation is permissible, just as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to supplicate for his companions.
