The question

Does "the detestable" in the remembrance "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner... will be a protection from Satan and from the detestable" refer to what Allah abhors or to worldly misfortunes? And does saying "O Allah, protect us from the Fire" protect its sayer from the Fire even if he falls short in performing the means?

The answer

An-Nasa'i and At-Tirmidhi reported from Abu Dharr that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever says after the Fajr prayer, before speaking: 'There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent,' ten times, ten good deeds will be written for him, ten evil deeds will be erased from him, and he will be raised ten degrees. And his day will be in protection from all disliked things and guarded from Satan, and no sin will overtake him except associating partners with Allah." And "disliked things" refers to calamities and the like that a person dislikes.

And in At-Tirmidhi, from Anas, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times, Paradise says: 'O Allah, admit him to Paradise.' And whoever seeks refuge from the Fire three times, the Fire says: 'O Allah, grant him refuge from the Fire.'"

And Ahmad, An-Nasa'i, and Abu Dawud narrated from Muslim bin Al-Harith At-Tamimi, from his father, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: "When you pray Fajr, say before you speak: 'O Allah, grant me refuge from the Fire,' seven times. For if you die on that day, Allah will write for you protection from the Fire. And when you pray Maghrib, say before you speak: 'O Allah, grant me refuge from the Fire,' seven times. For if you die on that night, Allah will write for you protection from the Fire." This means complete immunity from entering the Fire, and it is possible that what is meant is the Fire of eternity, and this may be conditioned upon avoiding major sins.
