Zakat is not obligatory on gold unless it reaches the nisab (minimum taxable amount) and a full hawl (lunar year) has passed while it is owned by one individual. There is no Zakat on gold collected for several people if an individual's share does not reach the nisab. Zakat is obligatory on the gold of a wife or daughters if it is saved and reaches the nisab, whereas gold used for adornment is not subject to Zakat according to the majority of jurists. If the gold belongs to a man and he keeps it for savings, then permits his wife and daughters to wear it without transferring ownership, then the man must pay Zakat on it for every year that has passed. Zakat is not waived if the gold is lost after it became obligatory.
