What is the ruling on a new Muslim who drinks alcohol, and is their punishment lashing or ta'zir?
If someone drank alcohol soon after converting to Islam and was ignorant of its prohibition, then there is no blame on him, because one of the conditions for punishment is knowledge of the prohibition. However, if he knew of its prohibition, then he is subject to the penalty for drinking, which is eighty lashes according to the majority of scholars, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever drinks alcohol, flog him."
