What is the ruling on a Muslim going to a church to have a spell broken, seeking the help of a priest who recites from the Gospel and the Torah?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on seeking ruqyah (exorcism/spiritual healing) from the People of the Book. Some have forbidden it, while others have permitted it. Sheikh Ibn Baz issued a fatwa allowing a Christian or Jew to perform ruqyah for a Muslim, provided that they are not among those who wage war against Muslims and that the ruqyah is legitimate, using the Quran or supplication. However, if it uses the distorted Torah or Gospel, it is not permissible. The basic principle is that ruqyah from a person of the Book is permissible, on condition that it is performed using the Quran, the Sunnah, Allah's names and attributes, or understandable Arabic speech. Nevertheless, it is advisable to avoid them.
