What is meant by a single session (majlis wahid) in divorce is when a man divorces his wife with a triple pronouncement in one sitting, whether with a single utterance (e.g., "You are divorced by three") or with separate utterances (e.g., "You are divorced, you are divorced, you are divorced"). The majority of scholars, including the imams of the four schools of thought, hold that this type of divorce counts as three pronouncements. However, some scholars, including Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, are of the view that it only counts as a single divorce, citing the hadith of Rukanah ibn Abd Yazid, who divorced his wife with three pronouncements, but the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made it count as one.

The majority of scholars responded that the hadith of Rukanah has another narration stating that he divorced his wife with "al-battah" (an irrevocable divorce) and not "three pronouncements," and that the second narration is more authentic because Rukanah's family members were more knowledgeable about his affair. The majority of scholars believe there is no difference between a single session and multiple sessions in the occurrence of a triple divorce. As for the dissenting view, they do not consider more than one divorce to occur during a single period of purity (tuhr) in which conjugal relations were not resumed, unless he divorced, then resumed conjugal relations, then divorced, then resumed conjugal relations, then divorced, in which case all three pronouncements count by consensus.
