Performing the five daily prayers in congregation is obligatory for those who are able. Among the proofs for this is the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) command to the blind man to attend congregational prayer when he heard the call. Exceptions are made for those with valid excuses, such as the sick, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "Whoever hears the call [to prayer] and is not prevented from following it by an excuse — they asked: 'And what is the excuse, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Fear or illness' — Allah will not accept the prayer he prayed." The criterion for an illness that permits absence is one that causes hardship. As for minor symptoms like shivers, they are not considered an excuse. One should be keen and diligent in attending congregational prayers and beware of the Devil's discouragement.
