Is it permissible in the expiation for an oath to combine feeding and clothing ten needy persons, such as feeding seven and clothing three, or must the type be uniform (feeding ten or clothing ten)?

The expiation for an oath is the freeing of a slave, or feeding ten poor people, or clothing them. Whoever cannot find [the means to do] so, then a fast of three days. Scholars have differed regarding the permissibility of combining between feeding and clothing, such as feeding five and clothing five:

The Hanafis and Hanbalis permit this. The Hanafis have a detailed view on the matter of giving ownership of the food or making it permissible [to consume]. The Malikis, Shafi'is, and Zahiris prohibit it, based on the fact that the noble verse mentioned three characteristics and did not combine between them, and that combining them would constitute a fourth characteristic.

The safer approach for the accountable person is not to combine between the characteristics of the expiation, but rather to choose one of them. However, if they have previously done so, thinking it would suffice, then it is hoped that there will be no blame upon them, as they acted upon a valid opinion in a matter of jurisprudential reasoning (ijtihad).
