Is it obligatory to obey the mother in her refusal to marry her daughter to a well-mannered young man? And is the mother considered the guardian (wali) of her daughter, or are the male siblings more entitled to guardianship in marrying off their sister? And is disobeying the mother in this matter considered an act of undutifulness (uquq)?

The relationship between a young man and a young woman before marriage is forbidden (haram); it must be severed, and one must repent from it. Obedience to the mother is obligatory if she objects to this relationship.

The young man must propose to the young woman through her guardian (wali). If there are multiple guardians of the same degree, the ruler (judge) has the authority to decide who will solemnize the marriage contract. If there is no ruler, then lots should be drawn among them. If the woman designates one of them, then no one else has the right to object. Others have suggested prioritizing the eldest brother.
