"Whoever comes to a diviner and asks him about something, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights." The meaning of "not accepted" here is that he will not be rewarded for his prayers with the reward of those who are pleasing and honored, and that his prayers will not be fully accepted in a way that entails reward and its multiplication. Scholars have agreed that he is not obligated to repeat the prayers of the forty nights. A diviner (al-arraf) is a soothsayer or an astrologer who claims to know the unseen, the location of stolen items, lost things, and the like. This act is considered among the major sins.
