What should a religious person do who is suffering from marital problems and his wife's nervousness, given that he felt distressed when performing Istikhara regarding mending his home, but felt relief when performing Istikhara regarding separation and marrying another, and he has two daughters?
It is not permissible to abandon one's wife merely due to disagreements. Rather, the prescribed approach is to follow the steps for addressing 'nushuz' (disobedience/defiance): admonition, then abandonment in the conjugal bed, then light physical discipline that does not cause harm. If these methods are not effective, then two arbiters, one from each family, should be sought. Divorce is the last resort.
Polygyny is permissible when one is capable and on condition of fairness. After performing Istikhara (prayer for guidance), one should proceed with the matter and not abandon it unless Allah diverts them from it.
Affection and understanding between spouses require patience, overlooking faults, and focusing on good qualities, in fulfillment of the Almighty’s saying: "And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good," and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another."
Divorce is not a trivial matter, and it should not be resorted to except when all means of reconciliation have been exhausted. Enduring a wife's bad temper holds great reward.
