Is the following Hadith authentic: "Leaving a single daniq of haram (unlawful gain) is better than eighty Hajj pilgrimages after embracing Islam"?
The circulated hadith: "Returning a daniq [a small coin] of unlawful gain is better in the sight of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, than seventy accepted Hajj pilgrimages" has not been authenticated as originating from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Scholars have ruled it to be fabricated and a lie, and the one accused of fabricating it is "Ismail ibn Wahb al-Taharmasi."
However, if similar statements were to originate from the Companions or the Pious Predecessors, their acceptance is probable as a stern warning against consuming unlawful wealth. This is because the gravity of unlawful gain pertains to the rights of individuals and combines the two sins of illicit wealth and aggression against rights.
Scholars have clarified that preferring to abandon forbidden acts over performing acts of obedience applies only to supererogatory acts of worship. As for obligatory acts, they are superior to abandoning forbidden acts. This is supported by the statement of Ibn Umar: "Returning a daniq of unlawful gain is better than spending one hundred thousand [dinars] in the way of Allah." The summary of the statements of the Pious Predecessors indicates that avoiding forbidden acts—even if few—is better than performing numerous supererogatory acts of worship, because avoiding forbidden acts is an obligation, while supererogatory acts are voluntary.
