Is there a hadith stating that the Muslims in the time of the Messenger who abandoned a tenth of what they were commanded would enter Hellfire, and that the Muslims at the end of time who practiced a tenth of what they were commanded would enter Paradise? And is this meaning correct, even if it is not a hadith?
The hadith: "Indeed, you are in a time where whoever among you abandons a tenth of what he is commanded will perish. Then there will come a time when whoever among them acts upon a tenth of what he is commanded will be saved," is weak for the following reasons:
1. The hadith is ghareeb (uncommon) and narrated through the chain of Nu'aym ibn Hammad, whom some imams of hadith deemed weak due to his poor memory and numerous objectionable narrations (manakeer). He was also attributed with making errors and elevating mawquf (stopped) narrations to marfu' (elevated) ones, and sometimes he would be singular in narrating objectionable hadiths. 2. Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Nasa'i considered it an objectionable hadith and said about Nu'aym: "He is not trustworthy." 3. Al-Dhahabi went further to state that the hadith is objectionable, and he questioned Nu'aym's source for it, suggesting that Sufyan ibn Uyaynah might have said it on his own without an isnad (chain of narration), and Nu'aym mistakenly thought the mentioned isnad belonged to this statement. 4. It has a supporting narration (shahid) from Imam Ahmad, transmitted from Abu Dharr, but its isnad contains Mu'ammal ibn Isma'il, who is truthful but has a poor memory. Furthermore, the hearing of Abu al-Siddiq and Abu Nadra from Abu Dharr is questionable.
The explanation of the hadith, assuming its authenticity, indicates that perishing in the first era is because religion was strong and its supporters were numerous, so neglecting a part of the command was considered a shortcoming. As for salvation in the second era (when the strength of Islam weakens and oppressors multiply), it is due to the inability to act upon much, and this is not considered a shortcoming.
