What is the reality of our master Jesus, upon him be peace? Is he alive or dead? How can one reconcile the scriptural proofs regarding his life with the mortality of humanity? And is it true that one should not delve into these matters on the grounds that they pertain to the unseen?

The Qur'an clarified the reality of Jesus (peace be upon him) in more than one place, including: "The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers had passed on before him, and his mother was a woman of truth," and "The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was but the Messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him." His ascension, which is affirmed by the Qur'an and Sunnah, does not contradict verses indicating the demise of every creature, because his ascension does not necessitate his immortality. It is affirmed in the Sunnah that he will remain on Earth for forty years after his descent, then he will die, and Muslims will pray over him. "And there is none of the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him before his death." His being in heaven is affirmed by the Qur'an: "Rather, Allah raised him to Himself" and "and raised you to Myself." There is no harm in asking for benefit and to remove doubts, but one should not delve into matters of the unseen that can only be known through revelation.
