Is it permissible to abandon the night vigil (Qiyam al-Layl) and other supererogatory prayers (nawafil) out of fear of being seen by family, and what is the solution for this psychological problem that causes sadness?
Fear of showing off (riya') should not lead you to abandon acts of obedience. The righteous predecessors and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to practice their worship in front of their families. Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad said: "To abandon an action for the sake of people is showing off (riya'), and to perform an action for the sake of people is polytheism (shirk), and sincerity is for Allah to free you from both."
Concealing worship is desirable, but not to the extent of blameworthy extremism, such as becoming angry if someone knows about your prayer, or abandoning prayer for fear of others seeing it. The Lawgiver encouraged sincerity in action and concealing it, but did not prohibit its manifestation. Indeed, sometimes its manifestation may be preferable if one is an example.
Ward off worry and sadness due to others knowing about your worship. Whatever you can conceal without undue effort, do so. Otherwise, do not exert yourself unnecessarily and do not abandon worship for fear of showing off. Indeed, people's knowledge of your worship and uprightness may be a reason for them to bear witness to your goodness and righteousness after your death.
