Is it true that the stronger a person's faith, the more they are tested, and is it permissible for a Muslim to be negligent in performing recommended and desirable acts to avoid an abundance of trials?

Viewing supererogatory acts (Mustahabbat and Mandubat) as a gateway to calamities is an error; rather, they are a gateway to Allah's divine grace and love. Through voluntary acts of worship, a servant draws near to Allah until He loves and supports him. It is part of Iblis's deception to weaken faith out of fear of affliction, whereas Allah tests the believers, as He says: "Do people think that they will be left alone because they say, 'We believe,' and will not be tested?" What is prescribed for a Muslim is to ask Allah for well-being and to be patient when afflicted, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O people! Do not wish to meet the enemy, but ask Allah for well-being. And if you meet them, then be patient."
