The answer

The mother-in-law's extended stay in the husband's house is permissible with his consent, but the husband has the right to refuse, and the wife must obey him, based on the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) saying: "As for your rights over your women, they should not allow anyone you dislike to step on your فرش [bedding/carpet], nor should they permit anyone you dislike into your houses." The husband has the right to prevent his wife's parents and relatives from staying long in his house because it is his property.

The wife must fear Allah and obey her husband, for the husband's right takes precedence over the rights of her parents. The mother-in-law should consider the husband's right by reducing long visits, in order to maintain the integrity of the marital relationship.
