How does one respond to a fool, and what should a person do if they are unable to remain silent?

Ignoring the foolish and forgiving the oppressor is a superior rank, as in the hadith of Uqbah ibn Amir: "Connect with whoever severs ties with you, give to whoever deprives you, and turn away from whoever wrongs you." If a Muslim finds this difficult, they may seek retribution for themselves to the extent of their grievance, without transgression, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "What two disputing parties say, the sin is upon the initiator, unless the wronged party transgresses." Vengeance is permissible on condition of achieving parity and not transgressing with lies, slander, or insulting ancestors. The one who is slandered should only seek retribution with words similar to what was said to him, such as: "O oppressor," or "O fool." Nevertheless, forgiveness and patience are better, for Allah Almighty says: {But if one is patient and forgives, indeed that is of the matters [requiring] great resolution.} And slandering a Muslim unjustly is forbidden and an act of wickedness.
