Is it true that Az-Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam used to beat Asma bint Abi Bakr, and did the Companions (Sahabah) beat their wives?

Al-Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam was among the great and virtuous Companions. Some narrations mention that he struck his wife, Asma bint Abi Bakr. Similar incidents occurred with some Companions during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him. The Prophet, peace be upon him, permitted striking women after Umar's complaint, then he said: "Many women have gone around Muhammad’s household complaining about their husbands; those are not the best among you."

What occurred with Al-Zubayr and other Companions is not the ideal model. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, never struck anything with his hand, neither a woman nor a servant, except when striving in the way of Allah." The best conduct is to endure harm from family and forgive them.
