What is the ruling on the remainder of a garment or body if its lower part was afflicted by an impurity and then purified by what came after it?

The general rule is that impurities are not purified except by pure water. Exceptions to this are sandals and the hem of a woman's garment, which can be purified by earth, as a concession due to necessity. So, if sandals are soiled, rubbing them with earth purifies them. Similarly, if a woman's hem passes over an impure place and then over a pure place, what comes after purifies it. However, the impurity of clothes and the body cannot be purified except by water.
