What should someone do who has been blessed by God with righteous friends who believe he is the most devout among them, while he sees himself as a transgressor and fears being a hypocrite, despite his unsuccessful attempts to tell them the truth about himself?
Hypocrisy is either doctrinal or practical, and not merely a feeling or whispers [waswas]. If the feeling is one of weak self-monitoring [muraqabah] or a lack of perfect devotion to Allah, this is natural and was experienced by the Companions. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Hanzala when he felt hypocritical: "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, if you were to remain as you are when you are with me and during remembrance [dhikr], the angels would shake hands with you on your beds and in your streets. But, O Hanzala, there is a time for this and a time for that," (three times). However, if the feeling of hypocrisy is due to committing forbidden acts or neglecting obligations, one must hasten to repent.
