What are the proofs of those who forbid giving out zakat al-Fitr from pasta, and how do we respond to them?
It is not a condition for what is given in al-Fitr to be something that comes from the earth. Al-Bukhari reported in his from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: "We used to give out during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the Day of Fitr, a sa' of food." Abu Sa'id said: "And our food was barley, raisins, dried yogurt (aqt), and dates."
Aqt is dried solidified milk. The majority of jurists have permitted giving Zakat al-Fitr from it. Some scholars have also permitted giving pasta for Zakat al-Fitr if it is a staple food for people. The preponderant opinion is that anything that is a staple food, whether grain, fruit, meat, or the like, is sufficient.
