Is it permissible to give Zakat al-Fitr from dates and dried yogurt, even though they are not considered staple foods in many countries?
The zakat al-Fitr must be given from the staple food of the people of the land. If dates, dried yogurt, or raisins are their staple food, then it is permissible to give them. It is not permissible to give what is not a staple food. This is supported by the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him: "During the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, we used to give out one sa' of food on the day of Fitr, and our food was barley, raisins, dried yogurt, and dates." Imam An-Nawawi and the Malikis stipulated that zakat al-Fitr must be given from the predominant staple food of the land, and Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah chose this opinion. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen clarified that the wisdom behind zakat al-Fitr is to feed the poor, and this is achieved when what is given is a staple food for the people. He also explained that the mention of specific items in the hadith was because they were the predominant staple foods of the people at that time.
