What is the ruling on abandoning prayer because of applying makeup to the face, especially at university?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Neglecting prayer is one of the greatest major sins. Some scholars have even gone so far as to consider the one who abandons it an infidel, and this is the strongest opinion in terms of evidence, based on the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "The covenant between us and them is prayer; whoever abandons it has disbelieved." Therefore, it is not permissible to abandon prayer or delay it beyond its prescribed time except for a legitimate excuse. As for cosmetics, if they are applied after ablution, there is no harm in them as long as the ablution is not invalidated.

Regarding university studies, it is not permissible if it involves free mixing between men and women, unless the woman needs it and cannot find a university without such mixing. In that case, it is permissible for her to study, provided she avoids everything that might incite temptation, such as cosmetics and anything that involves beautification.
