Is it permissible to draw the face for the purpose of recording patients' medical conditions, knowing that drawing animate beings is forbidden?

It is not permissible to draw or photograph living beings except out of necessity or need, such as passport photos, identification cards, and photographs of criminals. This also includes photographing the face and any deformities or wounds on it for medical purposes before operations and keeping them in records, because it is a necessity and the image is incomplete. Photography is restricted to photographic images, not drawings, because drawing is more strictly prohibited. Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim stated that an incomplete image, such as "photographing the face, head, and chest," if what would prevent life from remaining is removed from it, then the implication of many jurists' statements is to permit it, especially if there is a need for this type of partial photography.
