An-Nawawi removed this ambiguity by stating that each of the aforementioned good deeds that are capable of expiating sins, expiates minor sins. If there are no minor sins, or if there are major sins, good deeds are recorded for it and ranks are elevated by it. If it encounters major sins and no minor sins, then it is hoped that it will alleviate the major sins. An-Nawawi clarified elsewhere that all sins are forgiven except major sins, and that major sins are not forgiven except through repentance or Allah's mercy and grace.
