What is the precise definition of extravagance in food and drink?
The criterion for extravagance (Israf) is exceeding what is sufficient, or excessive luxury, or transgressing from the permissible to the forbidden. Al-Sa'di explained that extravagance occurs by exceeding what is sufficient in foods that are harmful to the body, or by excessive luxury in food, drink, and clothing, or by transgressing from the permissible to the forbidden, because Allah dislikes extravagance and it harms the body and livelihood. Al-Razi stated in his Tafsir that the verse: "And do not be extravagant" ( ولا تسرفوا ) means not to let eating and drinking lead to the forbidden, and not to spend excessively in an undesirable manner, and not to consume a large amount that would be harmful. It is mentioned in "Al-Mabsut" that eating beyond satiety is harmful, akin to throwing away food, and it involves the rights of others, and it may cause illness. It should be noted that satiety varies depending on countries, times, individuals, and types of food.
