What is the ruling on workplaces asking female employees—especially young women—to be well-presented (unveiled or wearing a fashionable hijab), and to laugh and joke with customers, even shaking hands with them?

Piety (Taqwa) is Allah's injunction to the ancients and the moderns alike. It is the path to happiness in this world and the hereafter, and a means of blessing in sustenance. As for employing a female worker under the conditions mentioned, it is a sign of heedlessness and feeling secure from Allah's plot, and it might be a gradual enticement (istidraj) that leads to Hellfire. Furthermore, employing a woman who displays her adornment (mutabarrija), does not adhere to Islamic dress, and is instructed to jest with customers corrupts her and tempts others. This act is a grave sin, because whoever institutes a bad practice bears its burden and the burden of those who act upon it until the Day of Resurrection.
