If a man embraces Islam while his wife is Christian and he divorces her with three pronouncements in one utterance, does the divorce take effect, and is it considered a single divorce or three?

All praise is due to Allah. If the wife is a woman of the Scripture and her husband embraces Islam, the marriage remains valid and is not annulled. If he divorces her three times with a single utterance after his conversion to Islam, it counts as three divorces according to the majority of scholars, contrary to those who say it counts as one. However, if he divorced her before his conversion to Islam, some scholars consider it to have no legal effect, while the majority hold that she becomes unlawful for him until she marries another husband in a valid marriage. A Muslim marrying a woman of the Scripture is permissible with certain conditions, though it is not preferred, especially in lands of disbelief.
