I have heard that Makkah Al-Mukarramah is the center of the Earth. Is that true?

The study of whether Makkah is the center of the Earth branches into two aspects: the Shar'i (Islamic legal) and the scientific. From the Shar'i perspective, some scholars believe there are indications in the Holy Quran, the Prophet's Sunnah, and the traditions of the Salaf (pious predecessors) pointing to this, such as Allah's saying: (وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا) "And thus We have made you a middle nation" and (وَلِتُنْذِرَ أُمَّ الْقُرَىَ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهَا) "and to warn the Mother of Cities [Makkah] and those around it," which have been interpreted to mean that Makkah is the Mother of Cities and the center of the Earth. Furthermore, a weak hadith from Ibn Abbas mentions that the location of the House (Kaaba) was the first spot laid on Earth, and from it, the Earth was extended. There are also traditions from the Companions and their successors indicating that they viewed Makkah as the center of the Earth, but some of these might have been transmitted from the People of the Book. In conclusion, the Quran does not contain an explicit proof, and what has been mentioned are probable indications, while the marfu' hadith (attributed to the Prophet) is weak. From the scientific perspective, some researchers believe that Makkah is the center of the Earth, and this matter remains a subject of ijtihad (independent reasoning) and further research.
