Supplicating during prostration in both obligatory and supererogatory prayers is legislated due to the generality of the texts, including the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "As for prostration, strive in supplication therein, for it is most likely that you will be answered." As for pausing at verses of mercy and punishment to supplicate and seek refuge, this has been reported in the night prayer. Some scholars are of the view that it is restricted to supererogatory prayers, not obligatory ones, while others are of the view that it is recommended in every prayer.
