The question

What is your guidance for a person who suffers from tribal and regional bigotry, hates others for their differences, prides himself on his tribe, trying to highlight its name and deeds, and sees his tribe as better than other tribes, knowing that he lives in a bigoted environment and his relatives are likewise? And what is the standard for love, hate, and admiration for others?

The answer

Fanaticism for one's tribe or country that leads to hatred and arrogance towards others is a reprehensible form of pre-Islamic tribalism (Jahiliyyah asabiyyah). Boasting about one's lineage is blameworthy if it entails arrogance towards others. The Prophet, peace be upon him, condemned boasting about ancestries (ahsāb) and slandering lineages (ansāb). Al-Mubarakpuri said: "Boasting about ancestries is arrogance and self-aggrandizement based on the virtues and achievements of one's forefathers, which entails a man preferring himself over others to belittle them, and this is impermissible." As for slandering lineages, it "entails a man belittling the forefathers of others and preferring his own forefathers over theirs."

The scholar Al-Shanqeeti emphasized the prohibition of rallying around any bond other than Islam, such as nationalisms, and affirmed that the wisdom behind making people nations and tribes is for mutual recognition, not for tribalism.

A Muslim must have love for the sake of Allah and in Allah, so he loves believers for their faith and dislikes disobedient people for their disobedience and disbelievers for their disbelief. "Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, gives for the sake of Allah, and withholds for the sake of Allah, has perfected his faith."

However, loving one's tribe or the people of one's country due to kinship and proximity is permissible as long as it does not lead to pre-Islamic tribalism.

Self-admiration is among the causes of perdition, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, warned against it.
