The question

The answer

Love for Allah is one of the noblest attributes and greatest virtues. Allah has mandated His love for those who love each other for His sake, and has promised them a great status on the Day of Resurrection. However, Satan has wide access through this door, as he may delude some into believing their love is for Allah, when in reality it is infatuation and obsession. This kind of love can lead to harmful consequences.

Infatuation (al-ishq) is an excessive love whereby the beloved takes over the lover's heart and occupies their thoughts and remembrance, leading to an imbalance in the lover's psychological and physical life. The beginnings of infatuation are easy and sweet, but its middle is worry and sickness, and its end is destruction and death.

Causes of blameworthy attachment include weak faith, heedlessness of the Hereafter, an empty heart devoid of lawful love, idleness, the absence of good role models, and family neglect. Among the most dangerous effects of infatuation is that it can lead to shirk (polytheism) by prioritizing the beloved's pleasure over Allah's pleasure, and it can even reach the point of kufr (disbelief) if the love for the beloved is greater than the love for Allah.

The cure for this ailment lies in recognizing that what has afflicted the servant is due to their ignorance and heedlessness of Allah. They must learn the oneness of their Lord and His worship, increase in outward and inward acts of worship, turn to Allah in supplication, and return their heart to Him. Sincerity to Allah is the most beneficial remedy, for a sincere heart cannot be captivated by the infatuation of forms.

It is advised to reduce meetings, calls, and thinking about the other party to stop this relationship. One should be wary of Satan's whispers, which may push one towards destruction under the guise of love.
