Is man given free will or is he predetermined?
The questioner should ask himself: Did anyone force him to ask this question? Does he choose the type of his car? Does an accident, illness, or death befall him by his choice? The answer will become clear to him. The things that a sane person does, he undoubtedly does by his choice, as Allah Almighty says: "So whoever wills, let him take to his Lord a return" (Qur’an 78:39), and "Among you are some who desire this world and among you are some who desire the Hereafter" (Qur’an 3:152), and "then a ransom of fasting or charity or sacrifice" (Qur’an 2:196). And if the servant desires something and does it, we know that Allah Almighty has willed it; because He says: "For whoever among you wills to take a straight path. And you do not will except that Allah wills, Lord of the worlds" (Qur’an 81:28-29). As for matters that befall the servant without his choice, such as death, illness, and accidents, they are purely by divine decree, and the servant has no choice in them.
