What is the interpretation of Allah Almighty's saying: "When the angels said, 'O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary—eminent in this world and the Hereafter and among the closest to Allah'" (Al-Imran/45), and does "a word from Him" mean a spirit from Him, as claimed by Christians?

The ambiguous verses of the Qur'an must be understood in light of the clear-cut verses. It is not permissible to contradict one verse with another, or to follow the ambiguous and abandon the clear. The verses that speak about Jesus (peace be upon him) (such as Al Imran/44-51 and An-Nisa/171-173) do not indicate his divinity; rather, they refute the Christians and expose their deviation, affirming that he is Allah's servant and messenger, and His word which He bestowed upon Mary and a spirit from Him. These verses clearly indicate that Jesus is a created being, whom Allah created by His command "Be, and it is." He is honorable in this world and the Hereafter, and among those brought near, but he is neither a god nor the son of God. His designation as "a word" and "a spirit from Him" does not mean that he is a part of Allah, but rather refers to his special creation by the word "Be" and to the breathing of the spirit into him from Allah. These texts refute the Christian doctrines of the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus, and confirm that Jesus is a servant of Allah Almighty, like all other prophets.
