What are the limits of a husband's obedience in matters such as compelling his wife to work, or demanding from her more than she can bear in household affairs, and is the wife considered remiss if she does not fulfill these demands?

A wife's obedience to her husband is in matters of marital life. It is not the wife's duty to work, nor is she obliged to obey her husband if he orders her to do so, unless she willingly agrees. It is not permissible for a husband to exploit his guardianship by compelling her to do what is not religiously obligatory for her. Al-Qurtubi narrated from Ibn Abbas that the degree of men over women refers to encouraging men to treat women well and to be generous with them in wealth and character. Threatening a wife with divorce if she stops working is a bad thing. A woman riding with a driver constitutes unlawful khalwah (private seclusion), so it is not permissible to obey the husband in this regard. A wife's service to her husband and her management of household affairs is her duty, as is customary. The husband should not burden her with what she cannot bear, and he should be a helper to her, emulating the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who used to assist his family in their chores. Mutual understanding between spouses is advised for the family's happiness.
